Foreign bodies in the throat are most commonly food or unchewed pieces of food, as well as objects accidentally swallowed by a person. The most common foreign body in the throat is fish bones, accounting for about 80% of all cases. These are followed by pieces of plastic, other bones (rabbit, chicken), and coins. Button cells and batteries pose the greatest danger. With advances in electronics, batteries have become extremely small — about the size of half a matchstick. These are found, for example, in portable Bluetooth earbuds. Once they enter the acidic environment of the stomach, they can cause severe complications. Children may also find and swallow a watch or hearing aid battery. Therefore, it is critical that these objects are never accessible to children. Toys containing magnets, especially neodymium magnets, present a particular hazard. If a child swallows multiple magnets, they can attract each other across the intestinal walls, leading to severe complications and even death if prompt medical intervention is not provided. Clinical Case A 62-year-old patient presented to me. The previous day, he had eaten fish and subsequently felt discomfort on the right side of his throat. Suspecting a lodged bone, he attempted to self-extract it using bread crumb (please do not do this — this only pushes the bone deeper into the tissues). He then washed the bread down with water, but the pain and discomfort persisted. The following day, when he was unable to even eat breakfast, he consulted his family physician. Following an evaluation, an otolaryngologist removed a fish rib lodged in the palatine tonsil. A photo of the bone is attached to this post. Had the bone remained in the throat for several days, it could have caused an infectious complication and significantly complicated the course of disease. Important Do not self-medicate.
