Earlobe atheroma is a benign skin cyst resulting from the obstruction of a sebaceous gland duct. It can appear not only on the ear, but also on other areas of the head and body. Clinical Case A 63-year-old male patient presented with complaints of swelling in the ear region that had originated decades ago. Over this time, the lesion had significantly increased in size, began exerting pressure on the ear, and interfered with sleep. The patient was taking analgesics, but realized that this could not continue indefinitely and sought medical attention. Following examination, a diagnosis of earlobe atheroma was established. Excision under local anesthesia with referral of the tissue for histological examination to confirm the diagnosis was recommended. Postoperatively, the patient experienced itching and a "crawling" sensation (formication) for a few days due to irritation of nerve receptors and reduced oxygen delivery to the tissues. The sutures were removed after 10 days, and the discomfort completely resolved. What Is Important to Know If you notice a nodule or induration in the skin of your ear, face, or any other area of the body, consult your family physician first, and then a surgeon or an otolaryngologist for diagnosis and management strategy. In the photos, you can see various earlobe atheromas, their structure post-excision, and aesthetically placed sutures that make the scar almost imperceptible in the early postoperative period; after suture removal, the ear looks completely normal.
